These masks are carved in wood and then covered in beads, glued on one by one, to create bright and symbolic expressions. Here's what the artisan, Armando has to share about them (translated from Spanish):
"The feather masks generally represent our big day because of all the colors that most of the community uses on this day, from boys, girls, to the oldest. The big day is a day of forgiveness and reconciliation, to celebrate life, and gratitude to mother earth, hence the different gestures in the masks carved in willow wood. The facial expressions represent various feelings of happiness, singing, shouting, mischievousness, whistling, etc".
